I have had long hair ever since I was allowed to choose how I wanted my hair. Before that my mum was adamant I looked adorable with a bob (I did not), and due to her hatred of fringes (bad experience when she was younger) I never had one either. Looking back at photos, I have had long hair since around year 4, so around 8 years, but this summer I started looking at Pinterest for long bob inspiration. I decided to change my hair with the season!
Crazy as it sounds I actually found myself loving all the possibilities for my hair. While long hair was really fun and I love how it looks on camera and in real life, I never styled it. The most love my hair would get would be after a shower: hair oil and into plaits. The waves looked pretty but I could never experiment; there’s not enough time to blow dry and straighten it, nor could my arms hold out to curl it. I would say my hair is now somewhat of a long bob, I haven’t completely given up the length but it’s so much easier to maintain.
My hair has never been easy to look after, I have vivd memories of my mum having to spend ages combing through my hair to get out the knots (TangleTeezer where were you then??) However hard I have tried since then I still end up with matted hair. I can have brushed my hair minutes before, walked somewhere not too far away, and my hair will have matted up. It use to infuriate me as the choice was: brush it and ruin the hairstyling or, not brush it and know your hair will be incredibly matted when you arrived home. The hairdresser said I would need a decent amount off the bottom to counteract this and apparently I have managed to have enough off as it hasn’t matted since the cut.
I found quite a few hairstyles that I loved, shorter than I decided to go in the end as well, and of course I created a Pinterest board to show my hairdresser. We eventually decided on collar bone length, though next time I get my hair cut I’m going shoulder length – proper long bob. Margot Robbie with the shorter hair started my hunt for long bob inspiration, I personally feel more comfortable wearing my hair wavy but she looks incredible with it poker straight too.
Like I said, I absolutely love my new hair but we now have a new problem: I now want highlights. For this I blame Beth Sandland and Em Sheldon as they are complete hair goals for me at the moment. I’m also over the yellow tones of my natural hair colour and am ready to enter the world of ash blonde. Another amazing consequence of cutting my hair is that I am saving money on hair care products. I used to go through conditioner like nobody’s business, but now it lasts longer than a month!
If you see me soon with even shorter hair – don’t be alarmed. I’ve very nearly booked the appointment a number of times now, and if I get it cut I can do the patch test for next time too. I think the more time I spend on Pinterest, the more I want to do this. I’m also loving finding ways to style shorter hair, loose waves with a flat iron are my favourite way so far…
