NARS Ransom Lip Pencil Set

I am a sucker for buying myself gifts, especially around times when assignments are due and sales are on. I love NARS base and lip products, I’m yet to try any others as the price can often be rather eye watering, so when they offer value sets like this one, it doesn’t take much for me to find a way to justify making a purchase. ASOS had a sale on before Christmas which took the NARS Ransom Lip Pencil set down to £33.50, making the lip pencils practically drugstore prices so I could hardly say no.

I think what made the set catch my eye most, is how wearable all the shades are. I do love a statement lip colour and I’ve been gravitating towards them while shopping recently, but how often do I really wear a bright red or deep purple? There were three different lip sets for the holiday season, each came with a clutch too which I didn’t love at first but it’s growing on me. I think the other two sets were exclusive to NARS.com as I didn’t see them on ASOS but they were the Riot set with reds and pinks and the Manic set with more berry shades. (All three are still available on NARS website which is even better news!)

Until this set I had two of the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, Train Bleu, a deep aubergine and Dolce Vita, a dusty rose. Train Bleu is probably my favourite lip colour ever but it is so far out of my comfort zone, while Dolce Vita is quite wearable, amusingly it is Train Bleu that I have the full size of. I absolutely love the formula, it’s like it suggests and is velvety and for me, even though it’s matte, it doesn’t accentuate my dry patches. It also doesn’t make your lips feel super dry like other matte products such as the Colourpop Ultra Matte liquid lipsticks. They also has a really gentle sweet, candy like scent which is really pleasant.

The shades in the set are really nice and neutral. The swatches on my hand above from top to bottom are SkinTight, Mayhem, Rowdy and Trashed. SkinTight is a lighter nude than I would normally go for, however over my natural lip colour it creates a beautiful pinky peach, definitely one I will be reaching for in spring/summer. Mayhem is such an everyday dusty mauve shade that goes with pretty much anything. It’s one of my most worn shades of late, simply because it’s so easy just to apply and go about your day. Rowdy is another nude, this one is a slightly deeper beige, rather than a pinky peach. This is probably my least favourite, but only because I prefer pinky peaches to browny nudes, but with a pink lip liner underneath I can make it work with my pale skin. While Mayhem is my most worn, Trashed is my favourite, probably because it’s the darkest, most statement shade, NARS describe it as Orchid but I’d say more of a light berry. I love it applied normally, but also tapped onto the lips with my ring finger which creates a beautiful stained, barely there look.

While all three sets are still available on the NARS website, none are on offer which is a shame, though they are doing a gift with purchase if you spend over £70 if you did want to buy anything. If they do go on sale my eye is certainly on the Riot set for some bright shades, though if you’ve been reading my previous posts I am trying to Project Pan!

You can buy the NARS Ransom Lip Pencil set from the NARS website for £49.
